Qantas Hotels accepts points but frequent flyers sceptical
Australian flag carrier Qantas has recently launched Qantas Hotels, in co-operation with Expedia Travel, the American online travel giant. The hotel rates made available to buy for money, are exactly the same as directly from expedia.com, or from traditional travel agents like Aero Travel, who are members of the Expedia TAAP program.
But where it gets interesting, is the opportunity to pay for hotels using Qantas FF points. A quick research made by Aero Travel (4-day stay in Fiji, Dec.2013) shows that the value of 1000 points ranges between $7.08 and $7.81, a surprisingly bad value for the loyalty program members. To put things in perspective, if the same 1000:7.5 ratio applied with Qantas' own products, a flight upgrade from Discount Economy to Business on the Sydney-Hong Kong flight, would be worth an amazing $300 (40,000p). And to buy a one way Economy ticket Sydney-Hong Kong, would be worth just $225 (30,000p) plus taxes, which is less than a third of the lowest published low season fare with Qantas. To the travel professionals at Aero Travel, this is an indication that the points rate of Qantas Hotels is at least 3 times overinflated, and may be geared towards rapid deflation of the huge award point liabilities Qantas carry on their balance sheet. This can be achieved in two ways simultaneously - first by giving the FF members a chance to finally burn their points when and where they need it. And second, by presenting this new, lower point value to the auditing firms. This trick will help improve the company's balance sheet instantly by reassessing the short term liabilities to a lower level. In light of the recent downgrade in the S&P credit rating, this may be just what the doctor ordered.
