Embarking on a longhaul flight with your little one? Rest assured, it’s not as daunting as it may seem. Our seasoned travel advisor recently took to the skies with her baby and shared some invaluable tips for smooth sailing.

  • First things first, when it comes to essentials like car seats or prams, navigating Sydney Airport can be a breeze with Qantas, just remember to drop them off at the oversized baggage area – a different spot from your regular check-in.
  • Feeding your baby on the go? Whether it’s formula, water, or purees, you are welcome to bring them all with you. Plus, many airports offer convenient family rooms equipped with warm filtered water, microwaves, and bottle warmers. Keep the bottles all in one bag so you can easily locate them at the luggage check. Airlines do provide a limited range of baby food, milk, bottles, cereals and rusks but we always recommend passengers to bring products they know their baby will consume. If you do wish to have some baby food available on the flight make sure you request a baby meal when you’re booking.
  • Keeping things clean is key. Pack a mini brush and liquid dishwasher for easy bottle maintenance. And don’t forget, feeding your baby during takeoff and landing can help ease any ear discomfort. While on the flight you can always ask assistance from the cabin crew and they can clean your bottle or dummy for you.
  • Layer up! Airports and planes can get chilly, so it’s essential to be prepared with extra clothing for your little one. Accidents do happen, after all. And speaking of accidents, it’s wise to pack spare outfits for both baby and yourself—consider bringing more than one set for added peace of mind.
  • Changing diapers in tight airplane bathrooms? Opt for clothing with 2-way zippers for hassle-free access.
  • When booking your flight don’t hesitate to reserve a bassinet for your baby’s comfort and your peace of mind. But act fast, as these coveted spots tend to fill up quickly.
  • And while screens may not be your go-to at home, they can be a lifesaver in-flight – offering a well-deserved break for you and entertainment for your little one.
  • Finally, consider upgrading your seats for a more enjoyable journey. After all, a little extra comfort can go a long way. And remember, self-care is crucial – stay hydrated, stretch your legs, and catch some z’s when you can.

So, buckle up and enjoy the ride – with these tips, you and your baby are sure to soar through your travels with ease.
