FUN FACTS about the North Pole

Reaching the 90° North is considered one of the ultimate bucket-list adventures for explorers and travellers alike.

  • No land beneath your feet. The North Pole is floating sea ice, not solid land
  • Extreme day-night cycle. The sun rises in March and doesn’t set until September, then darkness lasts for six months.
  • Constant Movement. The ice at the North Pole drifts up to 10km per day
  • Magnetic vs. Geographic. The North Pole is the geographic top of the Earth, not the Magnetic north, which moves every year.
  • Polar Bears are Locals. They roam deep into the sea ice, hunting seals.

FUN FACTS about Polar Bears

  • They are marine mammals. Polar Bears spend so much time on sea ice, they are officially classified as marine animals, like whales and seals.
  • Super Sniffers. A polar bear can smell a seal up to 1 km away and even detect prey beneath the snow
  • Not actually white. Their fur is transparent and hollow, and their skin underneath is jet black to soak up the sun’s warmth
  • Massive but Stealthy. Adult males can weigh up to 600kg, yet they can move silently across ice like ninjas. They can swim over 100km in one stretch.
  • Cubs are tiny. Newborn polar bears are about the size of a guinea pig. They stay in a snow den with their mother until they are 3 months old and 10-15kg

FUN FACTS about doing a Polar Plunge in the Arctic

Onboard Le Commandant Charcot, a Polar Plunge is a rite of passage for guests.

  • Temperature Shock! The water is usually around -2 ° Celsius, cold enough to freeze sea ice but still liquid because of the salt.
  • It is over fast! Most plunges last 3 to 10 seconds – your body doesn’t want you to stay longer.
  • Adrenaline kicks in instantly. Your heart rate can double in seconds, giving you a rush stronger than a triple espresso.
  • It is Safe. The Expedition team stands by with heated towels, ropes and a glass of celebratory champagne.
  • Bragging rights forever. Fewer people have done an Arctic Polar Plunge than have climbed Mount Everest
